Our Colonial Inheritance, a book by Wayne modest and Wendeline Flores, explores the complex ways in which slavery and colonialism continue to shape our present. In this book over 30 scholars, artists and museum professionals describe what it means to inherit the (infra)structures of the colonial past, its categories, its relations, and even its objects. This publication asks us, and its readers, how we deal with such bequests.
After designing one of the rooms in the Our Colonial Inheritance exhibition together with architects Afaina de Jong and Kossmandejong, artist Farida Sedoc continued to be in conversation with Wereld Museum Amsterdam also becoming the book designer. I assisted Farida in establishing a suitable framework for the graphic design. Besides the choice of vibrant colors, the grittiness and the bold, straightforward design, an important choice was made to incorporate a font made by samoan-born graphic designer Joseph Churchward.
